The Energy Balance Research Group at the University of Utah examines how the local environment and family history influence health outcomes like obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The group has been collaborating for over 15 years on these issues.

This study examines caregivers’ emotional expressiveness to toddlers using ecological momentary assessments and observational data. It explores how financial stress impacts caregivers’ emotional regulation and expressivity, contributing to children’s emotional competence development.

The Community and Health Inequities (CHI) Lab at the University of Utah, led by Dr. David Curtis, investigates health disparities through projects on preterm birth risks among Black mothers and the impact of neighborhood recreational spaces on obesity.

The Bird Strike Project at the University of Utah, led by Professor Barbara Brown, aims to reduce bird-window collisions through the installation of Feather Friendly® window protection. The project has successfully reduced bird strikes by 71%, and provides resources for conducting similar studies.

The Moving Across Places Study (MAPS) at the University of Utah examines how neighborhood changes around North Temple affect travel patterns and residents’ perceptions. Sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, the study aims to understand how community designs can encourage cancer-preventive behaviors.
