Human Development & Family Studies Early Childhood Education K-3 Emphasis

Catalog Year 2024-2025

All courses must be completed with a C- or better.

A partnership between Family and Consumer Studies and the Urban Institute of Teacher Education offers a pathway to K-3 licensure with the HDFS Early Childhood Education major. Students develop knowledge and skills in child development, learning, observation, assessment, pedagogy, and research through classroom and field experiences.

Graduation Requirements

To fulfill general education and graduation requirements, each student must have a minimum U of U 2.0 GPA, 122 minimum credits, 40 upper division credits, and 30 residency credits.

UITE is highly recommends students also take ED PS 5321 Reading Methods II. Beginning Fall 2025 it will become a required Licensure program pre-req.

Application Timeline


We recommend students who begin the combined program as first year students formally apply during their second year of course work. Students who begin the program letter in their college career should meet with an academic advisor to determine the best time to apply for the licensure component. Applications are due by February 1 of the year that the applicant plans to complete their licensure year (ex. due February 1, 2024 for students planning to start licensure program in August of 2024.)

Application requirements for licensure program:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Application
  • Personal Statement
  • Transcripts, University of Utah, transfer, any concurrent enrollment
  • Three letters of recommendation, Academic, Professional and Teaching/Working with kids
  • Background check (CACTUS Screenshot for verification)

Students are encouraged to use the Teacher Education Workshop Series for assistance in completing their application.
