Department of Family & Consumer Studies
The mission of the Family and Consumer Studies Department is to provide our students with cutting edge knowledge, critical thinking skills, and real life opportunities needed to transform policies and improve the lives of families and communities through careers within the non-profit, public, and private sectors.
Family and Consumer Studies (FCS) is an interdisciplinary department where faculty and students examine how the social, economic, political, and physical environments affect families, individuals, and consumers. The teaching, research, and service done in the department focuses on expanding understanding of how the welfare of individuals, families and communities are affected by external and internal forces; such as proximity to green space and nature, the longterm effects of quality early life/child education, health outcomes in differing economic communities, and teaching financial planning as a fundamental way to change the way individuals and families think about money.
The department emphasizes applied social science research and teaching with a strong public policy orientation.

Register For FCS 3510
FCS 3510 Tax Preparation and Community, taughtby Ann House, provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for IRS tax preparation certification. Students then put their certification togood use by working with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) assisting community members with income tax filing.
